Precise surgical solutions for dental and jaw problems
As a specialty of dentistry, oral/maxillofacial surgeons treat diseases and deformities of the mouth, teeth, jaws and maxillofacial area. Both Falmouth Hospital and Cape Cod Hospital offer the full scope of capabilities for the simple and the complex.

“Most often we’ll see facial fractures from car accidents, sports injuries and blunt trauma,” said Robert J. Wygonski, D.M.D., board-certified surgeon admitting to Cape Cod Hospital. “But we also perform corrective jaw surgery for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Reconstructive surgeries for bone loss due to cancer, to correct overbites, or to relieve pain from (temporomandibular joint) TMJ syndrome are not uncommon.”

Complex extractions and impacted wisdom teeth are also all in a day’s work for our oral surgeons.

“We have become very sophisticated at implant placement as well as pre-prosthetic surgery for dentures,” said Vincent Phillipino, D.D.S., board-certified surgeon admitting to Falmouth Hospital. “Equipment continues to evolve to make bone grafts and augmentation easier, and make the surgery easier on the patient. There are new short-acting medications to anesthetize better so that we can perform complicated procedures on an outpatient basis.” Oral surgeons can rely on the hospitals' anesthesiologists to perform pre-operative evaluations to manage risks and complications. Their labs, pathology departments and medical doctors all work together to attend to hematological problems, antibiotic selection and infection control.

“And, I appreciate Falmouth’s hospitalist service,” Dr. Phillipino added. “If my patient doesn’t have a primary care doctor, the hospitalist can attend to any medical issues that may affect surgery and recovery.”
